Have your questions answered by our resident feline expert. Maverick C. has been a spoiled tabby cat for the last decade (don’t ask how old that is in cat years – he won’t tell). If you want insight into the mind of your pet, don’t ask a human, ask a cat.

I really hate cats and my girlfriend wants us to have one when we get married. So I want to know what the least utterly puke-making species of animal is and how best to make it unhappy. Also, I will, as part of the deal, have a dog. Do you know what kind will chase cats the most?
simon.thomson@lincoln.ox.ac.uk

AC: Cats hate you too. All kinds of cats hate you for a variety of reasons. You can see them at mycathatesyou.com. Answer Cat had a little talk with your girlfriend and I don't think you will be getting married but I'm sure you and your cat-chasing dog will be very happy on your own.

I just recently gave my 6 year old cat some catnip. She loves it! But I was wondering if too much is bad for them.
crumpleralecia@yahoo.com

AC: Nepata Cataria, commonly known as catnip, is a mint-like plant that causes euphoria in cats. It should not be given to cats under six months old and cats should not be permitted to ingest large amounts of catnip. It would be groovy to put on a Grateful Dead album and give your cat some nip once a day (but never at dusk).

I've had my cat since she was four years old. Now she is 16 years old. How old is that in "cat" years?
mdp12881@hotmail.com

AC: This was our most popular question this month. Apparently you cat owners are just obsessed with your cat's age. There are various formulas for converting your cat's age to "cat" years. You'll have to find them on your own. Didn't you read the introduction? However, I can tell you this: Your kitty is officially a senior and entitled extra love and attention.

Why is my cat drinking so much water, so often?
BrooksFranBrooks@aol.com

AC: How much is "so much" and how often is "so often"? My Magic Eight Ball says: "Go to the vet" if your cat's drinking has suddenly increased significantly.

Why does my Catanga attack me when I'm just minding my own business?
ev_hay_hay@hotmail.com

AC: Are you really just minding your own business? I suspect not. You must be putting out some type of subtle vibe that makes your cat want to sink it's teeth into you. I had the urge to swat you just from reading your e-mail.

Please can you tell me how can I stop my cats from clawing the carpet on the bottom step of my stairs?
porterj100@hotmail.com

AC: Put a scratching post right in front of the stair. Or remove the carpeting from the stairs.
Keeping to a strict health regimen, The Answer Cat leads some interns through a routine of stomach crunches and belly rubbing.

My 5 year old male cat Zac constantly brings down the stuffed animals from the upstairs room where I keep the "toybox". Every single day are stuffed toys downstairs, I bring them all back upstairs and the next thing you know they're all back down. He usually meows this weird meow while he's bringing them down too. I even tried hiding his stuffed frog, which is pretty big for him, but he finds it and down it comes. It's almost like a game. What's that all about?
Susie0224@peoplepc.com

AC: You answered your own question. It's a game. Zac is playing with his toys. Isn't that what they're there for? What kind of person would hid a cat's stuffed frog? What's up with that?

My12 year old cat, Tigger, is very stubborn. He can't even stand to be in the same room as our dog. Tigger also sort of stalks my Mom. He was with another family for a while before we adopted him. Do you think something happened then? Is there any way I can help him be less moody?
ginger_bunny@eudoramail.com

AC: You've heard the expression you can't teach an old dog a new trick? Well it's even harder to teach a cranky old cat not be moody. Tigger's personality isn't going to change now so you'll just have to love him the way his is.

I am about to get a cat and she is the sweetest thing except that whenever I try to pick her up she starts to bite and claw. What should I do so I don't get bit?
ajsjcm@earthlink.net

AC: If a 20 foot tall person swooped down and picked you up in the air do you think you might get upset? Some cats do not want to be picked up. Don’t pick up your cat and you won't get bit.

My cousin says her cat is pregnant, but I don't think so. How can my cousin and I tell if her cat is pregnant?
vm5650@aol.com

AC: You and your cousin cannot tell if her cat is pregnant but a vet can.

My question for T-shirt is this: why do cats always seem to get the
last word in? Even if it's just a little meow?
catlady17@peoplepc.com

AC: My answer is this: Why shouldn't we have the last word? Nice try, but you'll be receiving an art print. You'll have to purchase a T-shirt. And that is the last word because this is my column.
